Page Hierarchy & Backlinks

Organize documents and build knowledge graphs

AnySlate helps you organize your documents with powerful hierarchy and linking features. Create sub-pages to nest related content, use breadcrumb navigation to move through your document tree, and leverage bidirectional backlinks to build an interconnected knowledge graph. These tools help you create structured, navigable documentation and personal knowledge bases.

Creating Sub-Pages

Nested Document Structure

Create sub-pages to organize related documents under a parent page. This creates a hierarchical structure similar to folders, but with documents.

How to create a sub-page:

  1. 1Navigate to the parent page in the file browser
  2. 2Right-click and select "New Sub-Page"
  3. 3Or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + N
  4. 4The new page will be nested under the parent

Example hierarchies:

Projects (parent)
Website Redesign
Mobile App
API Development
Meeting Notes (parent)
2024 Q1 Review
Sprint Planning
Retrospective
Research (parent)
Literature Review
Data Analysis
Conclusions

Breadcrumb Navigation

Know Where You Are

Breadcrumbs appear at the top of the editor, showing the path from the root to your current document. Click any breadcrumb to navigate to that level.

Example breadcrumb:

Backlinks

Automatic Detection

Backlinks are automatically detected when you create links between pages.

Backlinks Panel

View all backlinks in a dedicated panel in the sidebar.

Quick Navigation

Click any backlink to jump to that document instantly.

Context Preview

See the surrounding text where the link appears.

Creating Links Between Pages

Wiki-style links (recommended):

Check out the [[Project Overview]] for more details.

With display text:

See the [[Project Overview|overview]] for details.

Standard markdown links:

Check the [overview](/pages/project-overview).

Building a Knowledge Graph

Connected Knowledge

By consistently linking related pages, you create an interconnected knowledge graph. This approach, popularized by tools like Roam Research and Obsidian, helps surface unexpected connections and makes your notes more valuable over time.

Best practices for knowledge graphs:

  • Link generously between related concepts
  • Use consistent naming for pages
  • Review backlinks to discover new connections
  • Create hub pages that link to related topics
  • Let structure emerge organically from links

Zettelkasten Method

AnySlate's page hierarchy and backlinks support the Zettelkasten note-taking method, where atomic notes are connected through links to form a network of knowledge.

Nested Document Structure

Combine hierarchy and links for a powerful organization system:

Hierarchy for Structure

Use parent/child relationships for documents that naturally belong together, like chapters in a book or tasks in a project.

Links for Connections

Use links to connect related ideas across different parts of your workspace, regardless of their location in the hierarchy.

Tips

Start simple

Don't overthink your hierarchy. Start with a flat structure and add depth as needed.

Link first, organize later

Focus on capturing ideas and linking them. You can reorganize the hierarchy later.

Check backlinks regularly

Review backlinks to discover connections you might have forgotten.

Use descriptive page names

Clear page names make wiki-style links more readable and useful.
